Homework

We try to balance the pupil’s need to be a child at home and to have ‘time off’  to relax with our responsibility to prepare them for secondary school.  

Our guidelines for homework are outlined below, however please check with your child's class teacher for what their expectations and routines are.

Reception

  • 15 minutes per day reading with a parent, both guided reading books and free choice books taken from the class library.  Parents and teachers both write in the home-school reading diary with questions and progress updates.
  • Literacy based activities such as phonics work and learning ‘tricky words’ may also be given. 

Year 1/2

  • 15 minutes per day reading with a parent, home-school diaries continue.
  • 5 minutes spelling practice weekly (spellings will normally be sent home)
  • Times tables / Number bonds should be practised on an on-going basis.  
  • A project is set each half term, based upon the class topic.  It's expected that the projects will encompass aspetcs of literacy, maths, art, DT, music, Science, the Humanities throughout the year.

Year 3/4

  • Daily reading for 15 minutes, both guided reading books from school and free choice books.  Children may be asked to use their ‘Reading Journal’ to carry out tasks related to their Literacy work and guided reading book.
  • Weekly times tables practice is expected until the child has learnt all times tables.  It's expected that the projects will encompass aspetcs of literacy, maths, art, DT, music, Science, the Humanities throughout the year.

Year 5/6

  • 20 – 30 minutes independent reading every day.  Children are expected to use their ‘Reading Journal’ to carry out tasks related to their Literacy work and guided reading book.  It's expected that the projects will encompass aspetcs of literacy, maths, art, DT, music, Science, the Humanities throughout the year.
