Soho Parish Primary

Soho Parish Primary

Key Stage 1 & 2

The new National Curriculum covers eleven subjects in primary school. English, Mathematics and Science are classified as core subjects and receive the most teaching time.

Art & Design, Computing, Design & Technology, Languages (from Y3 onwards), Geography, History,  Music and PE are foundation subjects. In addition, as a state school we are required to make provision for PSHE (personal, social, health & economic) education, a daily act of collective worship and must teach religious education.

For further details of curriculum content across the school, please click on the specific subject links to the right, or click on individual class curriculum overviews on our Introduction page.

We aim to make our teaching as interesting as possible for the children by integrating the National Curriculum into topic work. Topic work is carefully planned and monitored to ensure that all aspects of the National Curriculum are covered.

Assessment of children’s progress is continuous and records are kept of children’s work. The staff at Soho Parish take special care to adapt their teaching methods to the particular learning needs of the children and the subject being taught.

As a result of the abolishment of National Curriculum levels from September 2015, there are no standardised attainment measures for children at Primary school.

We currently assess children's progress using 'Learning Journies' (which you will find in the front of your child's book , with our emphasis firmly looking at a child's Next Steps). In other words, we want every child to focus on what they need to do next to continue to learn, rather than what they can already do. Every half term, children in Years 2-6 will take a short test in Literacy and Maths to help support the class teacher's assessment.
