Soho Parish Primary

Music & Drama

We are proud of our passion for music at Soho Parish, which grows bigger and livelier every year. Encouraged by our setting in the heart of the West End, with excellent access to some of the top music venues in the UK, music increasingly brings our curriculum to life.

Violins are taught in Y5/6

Our specialist music teachers enable our children to foster an appreciation, understanding and enjoyment of a wide range of musical genres. The children are immersed in the knowledge and skills to develop as confident composers and performers of vocal, percussion and instrumental music.  In addition, every child learns to play a musical instrument. Currently Year 3 pupils are learning to play the recorder, whilst Year 5 pupils are learning the violin with a specialist violin tutor.

SP Rock Band at Hyde Park

ROCK BAND: The school has a thriving rock scene, with two (soon to be three!) rock bands on offer through after-school clubs. As well as performing at our own concerts, our bands have performed at a variety of venues including Hyde Park and the South Bank Battle of the Bands.

INSTRUMENTAL TUITION: The school also hosts a number of private peripatetic teachers who deliver weekly lessons in keyboard, drums and guitar lessons, enjoyed by over a 1/3 of our children.

CHOIR: Another stalwart of our after-school clubs is our choir, who perform at a number of events throughout the year, including the Royal Albert Hall, the St James Quintessentially concert and a whole host of carol concert venues.

CONCERTS: We believe in giving our children as many opportunities as possible to celebrate their musical & dramatic talents. This starts with our Friday Golden Assemblies, where every week a few children choose to perform a solo piece for the rest of the school.

We also organise a termly music concert for parents, as well as an International Evening in the summer term which is a combination of a food feast and a talent show!

Oliver! The musical

DRAMA: As well as regular class assemblies, where children will often act, the school also provides plenty of other opportunities for children to flex & develop their dramatic talents. These include a yearly play open to Years 3-6 - recent productions have included Oliver! (see pic, left) and Bugsy Malone.

In addition, many of our curriculum topics involved drama, notably our yearly Shakespeare unit for Year 3 and our Year 6 drama-writing unit in conjunction with Soho Theatre. Other recent projects include a collaboration with the ENO to help produce their first-ever children's opera (based on the Oliver Jeffers Back The Way Back Home), concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, visiting musicans from the Worshipful Company of Musicians and much, much more ...
